Super Over Rules in T20 World Cup 2024 – Explained

A Super Over in T20 cricket acts as a tie breaker to decide the winner in case the game has ended in a tie. This is also applicable in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, and we have already witnessed it happening twice.

Tie means both teams have fought hard and either of them didn’t deserve to lose but rules of T20 cricket states there needs to be a winner. And we decide them through the way of a Super Over.

So here is how the Super Over works in T20 World Cup and in the format as a whole.

Basics:

After the game has ended in a tie, each team will play an additional over (6 balls). They have to nominate three batsmen and one bowler each to operate in the Super Over. The batting team can continue until two wickets are lost or maximum quota of six balls are completed, whichever occurs first.

Here the team that chased in the actual game will have to bat first according to the Super Over rules. So, if a Team A had batted first in the game and it has ended in a tie then they have to chase in the Super Over.

There are no fielding restrictions in the Super Over and a fielding team can have up to five fielders in the boundary line.

The team that ends with the higher score in the Super Over wins the match and if the scores are still tied, then we can have another Super Over.

Second Super Over:

Once the scores at the end of first Super Over, then the game head to the second Super Over where the chasing team in the first Super Over contest will bat first.

One thing to remember here is that, if the batter had been dismissed in any of the previous Super Overs, then he/she is not eligible to bat again in any of the subsequent Super Overs.

This shall continue till a winner emerges and we can have N number of Super Overs with five minutes gap between them.

It is to be noted that in the previous instances of tied Super Over, we had winners decided by team which had hit the most boundaries in Super Over and then the original match.

There have been five games that have ended in a Tie in history of the T20 World Cup and two of which came in the first 15 games of 2024 edition.
