Top 5: Most Wins by a Team in T20 World Cup History
In T20 World Cup history, India hold the record for winning the most number of matches, and South Africa are just second to them.
In this article, we will talk about the top 5 teams with the most wins in T20 World Cup history.
5. Pakistan (30 Wins)
Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup final by 8 wickets, and they are the fifth-most successful team in the history of the T20 World Cup. Pakistan have 30 wins from 51 matches, and they have lost 21 matches, including tie-breaker defeats against India and the USA.
Except for the years 2014, 2016, and 2024, Team Pakistan has qualified for the semi-finals in every T20 World Cup edition. Pakistan were the runner-up in 2007 when they lost the final to the Indian team, and they were runner-ups in 2022 as well when they lost the final to the England team.
4. Australia (30 Wins)
Australia won their first T20 World Cup trophy in 2021 by beating New Zealand by 8 wickets. Australia is the fourth-most successful team in the history of the T20 World Cup, winning 28 matches out of 43 and losing 15 matches.
Australia qualified for the semi-finals of the inaugural T20 World Cup, and in the 2010 edition, they ended up as the runner-ups. They were semi-finalists in the 2012 T20 World Cup too, and they finally won the trophy in 2021 by beating New Zealand in the finals.
3. South Africa (32 Wins)
Team South Africa has never won a T20 World Cup, but they have 32 wins to their name, which makes them the third-most successful team in T20 World Cup history. South Africa have played 49 matches, winning 32, losing 16, and one match ending in a no-result.
The Proteas were the hosts of the inaugural T20 World Cup (2007), but they failed to make it to the semi-finals. South Africa made it to the final of a T20 World Cup for the first time in 2024, although they lost to India by 7 runs.
In 2009, they lost the semi-final by just 7 runs as they failed to chase down the target of 150 runs, and in 2014, they lost the semi-final by 6 wickets where they couldn’t defend 172 runs.
2. Sri Lanka (33 Wins)
Sri Lanka has logged the second-most wins in the history of the T20 World Cups. They have won 33 out of 54 matches and lost 21 matches.
Sri Lanka won their first T20 World Cup trophy by beating India in the 2014 edition. In the 2012 T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka were the runners-up as they lost the final to the West Indies. Since the 2016 edition, Sri Lanka have failed to reach the semi-finals.
1. India (36 Wins)
India is the most successful team in the history of the T20 World Cup. India were the champions of the inaugural T20 World Cup, where they beat Pakistan in the final by 5 runs.
Out of the 52 matches, India have 36 wins and 15 losses in the history of the T20 World Cup, and one of their matches in 2007 was abandoned due to rain.
After winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, India failed to reach the semi-finals for three consecutive editions before finishing as the runner-up in 2014, where they lost the final to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. India, in 2016 and 2022, made it to the semi-finals but lost to the West Indies by 7 wickets and England by 10 wickets, respectively.
In the 2024 edition, though, the Indian team remained unbeaten and went on to clinch their second T20 World Cup title.
