5. David Warner (Australia)

Australian opener David Warner is the fifth-highest run scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup, scoring around 984 runs in 41 matches.

Australia won the T20 World Cup in 2021, where David Warner won the Player of the Tournament award. Warner scored 289 runs in 7 matches at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 146.

The left-handed opener scored 49 runs from 30 balls for Australia in the semi-final against Pakistan in a run chase of 176 runs, and in the final against New Zealand, Warner scored 53 runs from 38 balls while chasing 172 runs.

 

4. Jos Buttler (England)

England skipper Jos Buttler became the fourth batter to cross the 1000-run mark in T20 World Cup history. The keeper-batter has scored 1013 runs in 34 matches in the T20 World Cup at a strike rate of 147,23.

Buttler played a key role in taking England to the 2021 semi-final and later, in 2022, led the team to their second T20 World Cup triumph.

3. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)

Former Sri Lankan captain and opener Mahela Jayawardene is the third-highest run scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup, scoring 1016 runs in 31 matches at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 134.

Mahela led Sri Lanka to the final of the 2012 T20 World Cup. He scored 243 runs in 7 innings at an average of 40, although Sri Lanka failed to win the final, losing to the West Indies by 36 runs.

The right-handed opener won the T20 World Cup in his last attempt in 2014. In this edition, he scored 158 runs in 6 matches at an average of 31.

 

2. Rohit Sharma (India)

Indian team captain Rohit Sharma is the second-highest run scorer in the T20 World Cup. He scored 1220 runs at a strike rate of more than 125 in 47 matches.

Rohit surpassed Mahela’s tally during India’s match against Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The right-handed attacking opener has played most matches in the history of the T20 World Cup. He won the trophy with the Indian team in 2007 as a player and in 2024 as a captain.

 

1. Virat Kohli (India)

Virat Kohli is the highest run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup. Kohli scored 1292 runs in the T20 World Cup in 35 matches, scoring runs at an average of 58.72 and a strike rate of 128.81.

Virat Kohli has twice won the Player of the Tournament award in T20 World Cup history and he is the only player to achieve this feat.

Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single edition of a T20 World Cup. In the 2014 T20 World Cup, he scored 319 runs in 6 innings, averaging over 100. The top-order batter scored more than 70 runs in both the semi-final and the final of the tournament. India failed to win the final, losing to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets.

Kohli again scored runs at an average of more than 100 in the 2016 T20 World Cup, taking India to the semi-final, where he scored 89 runs from 47 balls. India lost the match to West Indies by 7 wickets.
