In this article, we will talk about the top 5 highest successful run chases achieved in ODI cricket.

5. 362/1 by India vs Australia | 2013

On 16th October 2013, India chased down their highest total in an ODI match. Australia made 359/5 runs in their 50 overs and in response, India ended up scoring 362/1 runs from just 43.3 overs.

India were off to a great start with Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan stitching an opening stand of 176 runs where the left-hander scored 95 runs from 86 deliveries.

Virat Kohli, who came out to bat at number 3, batted ruthlessly to score a 52-ball century, which is also the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in ODI history. He attacked James Faulkner and Xavier Doherty, while Rohit took care of Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell and Clint McKay.

He smashed all of them throughout the innings. Rohit remained not out till the end with Kohli scoring 141* runs from 123 balls.

4. 364/4 by England vs West Indies | 2019

England chased down the target of 361 runs against the West Indies at Kensington Oval on 20th Feb 2019. This is the highest run chase for England in the ODI format.

Batting first, the West Indies posted 360 runs on the board, with Gayle smashing 12 sixes in his innings of 135 runs.

England, in the run chase, were off to a flier, with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow scoring 91 runs for the opening stand. Bairstow was dismissed but Roy continued to hit the ball hard with Joe Root scoring a run a ball hundred.

Skipper Eoin Morgan, batting at number 4, went after the spinners, hitting them for boundaries. And Jos Buttler sealed the match for England with a boundary when the score was 360. England finished the chase in 48.4 overs.

3. 372/6 by South Africa vs Australia | 2016

Miller’s knock of 118* runs from 79 balls helped South Africa in the chase of 372 runs at Durban.

Batting first, Australia took Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada to the cleaners. Both conceded 96 and 86 runs, respectively, in their 10 overs, with David Warner and Steven Smith hitting centuries.

South Africa, in response, were provided with a good start, with Hashim Amla hitting 45 runs from 30 balls and Quinton de Kock scoring 70 runs at a strike rate of 142 with the help of 6 fours and 2 sixes.

But South Africa lost 3 quick wickets and David Miller came out to bat who immediately took on Adam Zampa and never let him get settled. While the pacers were also finding it tough to bowl to the left-hander as he was hitting the sixes effortlessly.

Andile Phehlukwayo scored 42* runs from 39 balls in a partnership of 107 runs with Miller. South Africa won the match with 4 balls remaining.

2. 374/9 by Netherlands vs West Indies | 2023

The Netherlands vs West Indies match at Harare witnessed a super over finish in a high scoring encounter when both the teams were competing at the ICC CWC Qualifiers 2023.

Batting first, the West Indies posted 374 runs on the board with a quick hundred from Pooran’s bat.

In response, the Netherlands got a good start but they were soon reduced to the score of 170 for 4 after 30 overs, which was followed by Teja Nidamanuru playing one of the finest innings in Dutch cricket history.

He smashed 111 runs from 76 balls, an innings where he hit 3 sixes and 11 fours. Captain Scott Edwards played a knock of 67 runs from 47 balls.

The Netherlands too ended at the score of 374 runs and the match went to the super over where the Dutch scored 30 runs, all coming from Van Beek’s bat while the Windies managed to score 8 runs at the loss of 2 wickets in 5 balls.

1. 438/9 by South Africa vs Australia | 2006

South Africa holds the record for chasing down the highest score in the history of ODI cricket. South Africa achieved this feat against Australia who batted first and scored 434 runs which was chased by South Africa with 1 ball remaining.

This match was played in Johannesburg on 12th March 2006. Australia reached the score of 434 with the help of Ricky Ponting’s knock of 164 runs off 105 balls, including 13 fours and 9 sixes.

In response, South Africa lost their first wicket at the score of 3 runs but then came Herschelle Gibbs at 3 who went on to score 175 runs from 111 balls with the help of 21 fours and 7 sixes. He never let the spinners and the medium pacers settle.

Johan van der Wath played a cameo of 35 runs from 18 balls and Mark Boucher’s unbeaten half-century sealed the match for South Africa.
