on

Powerplays have become an integral part of limited-overs cricket and more so in T20 cricket. This format is designed to make the game fast-paced and more dynamic and the powerplay overs enable in the game going that way.

In this article we will look at how powerplays make T20 game interesting and how it is incorporated in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Though there are significant number of innovations done in the IPL over the years, it follows the regular T20 model when it comes to the rules of the powerplays.

So, what are Powerplay overs:

The powerplay overs are commonly referred to the first six overs of an innings in a T20 game. With this each team will have a chance to bat or bowl in the powerplays.

The powerplay overs automatically activates the fielding restrictions and it keeps a limit on the fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. So, for the first six overs in IPL, a team should mandatorily have 7 fielders (apart from bowler and wicketkeeper) inside the circle.

What impact does is it give to the teams?

The powerplay overs are there to give equal chances for both batting and fielding sides to get a good start to the game. On the batting front, it encourages aggressive batting from the sides and enables them to have a fast start during the initial phase of the innings. With the field up, it provides them the best opportunity to get maximum runs by finding ropes at will.

But it is also double-edged sword as it presents the bowlers with wicket-taking opportunities, especially if there is help on offer for the bowlers. This can completely derail the momentum of the batting side in-case there are any early inroads.

We can say that powerplay overs presents the team with a chance to get a grip on the game early and then capitalize on the later overs. And it is a phase where teams strategize, whether to attack from the start or keep wickets in-tact.
