Overseas Player Rule in IPL – Explained
One of the major reasons for the large appeal among the audience and its widespread success over the years in the IPL is its concept of overseas player rule. This makes it easy for the people from different parts of the cricketing community to connect with the tournament and have their own set of favorite to follow.
Right from the inception of the league, one thing that remains common in the IPL is the number of overseas players in each team. The IPL governing council and BCCI clearly formulated a set of rules regarding the category of overseas players in an IPL team.
Overseas players in an IPL squad
It states that in an IPL squad, there can be a maximum of eight non-Indian players, meaning the franchise can buy up to 8 overseas stars in the IPL auctions that takes place before the tournament. So, in a squad of 25 members for each franchise, there can be 8 foreign players to pick and choose from during the tournament.
If an overseas player is injured during or before the tournament, the franchise has the option of replacing them with another overseas player. However, in no circumstances, the number shall exceed 8 selectable overseas stars for a team.
Overseas players in an IPL match
Likewise, in a game each team can feature up to a maximum of 4 overseas players and they have the flexibility to choose 4 from the 8 players available in the squad depending on the match conditions, player availability and strategy.
In no situation, more than 4 overseas players can field for a team. If the line-up has 4 foreign players and an Indian player is off the field, then an overseas player can’t even come as a substitute in that case. However, if a team wants, they can play less than 4 overseas players. In short, a team is expected to always have at least 7 Indian players in the team sheet and out in the part.
Why Overseas players are important for IPL?
First is that it brings the league a lot of global appeal and IPL is one league that attracts a lot top talent from across the globe. We find many overseas stars wanting to play the IPL and the Indian public too are happy to see those players.
Apart from that it serves as the way to improve the standard of the league. While IPL gives Indian talent a lot of game time and opportunity, but the quality of the tourney gets substantially increased thanks to presence of these overseas stars. The local players also get to learn a lot from these players.
It increases the level of competition among the teams and 7-4 combination allows the teams to maintain a balance between local Indian talent and overseas players. Lastly for a non-cricketing reason, their presence fosters a cultural exchange between the players within the team.
