Top 5: Most Centuries by a Batter in T20 World Cup

In T20 World Cup history, only Chris Gayle has scored more than 1 century. Other than Gayle, around 10 players have a T20 World Cup hundred to their name.

In this article, we will talk about the 5 batters who have scored centuries in the T20 World Cup.

5. Ahmed Shehzad (Pakistan)

Ahmed Shehzad scored 111* runs from 62 balls against Bangladesh in the 2014 T20 World Cup. The right-handed attacking opener is the only Pakistani batter with a T20 World Cup century to his name.

Pakistan, while batting first, posted 190/5 runs on the board, and Shahid Afridi finished the innings well with his cameo of 22 runs from 9 balls.

4. Alex Hales (England)

Former England opener Alex Hales smashed 116* runs from 97 balls in a run chase against Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka batted first and scored 189/4 runs from their 20 overs, with Mahela Jayawardene scoring 89 runs from 51 balls and Tillakaratne Dilshan scoring 55 runs from 47 balls.

In reply, England lost 2 wickets in the first over but then Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan stitched a partnership of 152 runs. Morgan scored 57 runs, and Hales stayed till the end, ensuring a 6-wicket victory for his team.

3. Rilee Rossouw (South Africa)

In 2022, Rilee Rossouw became the first South African batter to score a hundred in the T20 World Cup with his individual score of 109 runs from 56 balls. The left-handed top-order batter achieved this feat while batting at number 3 against Bangladesh at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.

South Africa, batting first, posted a total of 205/5 runs in their 20 overs. Along with Rossouw, Quinton de Kock scored 63 runs from 38 balls.

2. Brendon McCullum (New Zealand)

The former New Zealand skipper smashed 123 runs from 58 balls against Bangladesh in the 2012 T20 World Cup. McCullum’s 123 is the highest individual score by a batter in the history of the T20 World Cup.

New Zealand, batting first, scored 191/3 runs in 20 overs. No other batter except McCullum stepped up.

1. Chris Gayle (West Indies)

Chris Gayle is the only batter in the history of the T20 World Cup to score two centuries — 117 against South Africa and 100* against England. He has a century while batting first and in a run chase too.

The left-handed opener scored 117 runs from 57 balls in the inaugural match of the T20 World Cup in 2007 against South Africa. Despite Gayle’s hundred, the Windies lost the match due to their poor bowling, as they failed to defend 205 runs.

The aggressive opener again scored a T20 World Cup hundred, this time against England in the 2016 edition. England batted first, scoring 182/6 from their 20 overs, with Joe Root top-scoring for them with his knock of 48 runs from 36 balls.

In the run chase, the Windies lost Johnson Charles’s wicket in the first over, but then Chris Gayle stitched a crucial partnership with Marlon Samuel. Gayle remained unbeaten on 100 runs from 48 balls.
