T20 World Cup
What if it Rains in the T20 World Cup 2024 Knockout matches?
The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup is shaping up very well and the Group stage phase is heading for exciting conclusion. Post which the 20-team tournament will become a 8-team affair as the two teams from each of the four groups will battle at the Super Eights.
Though the Super Eights stage is not knockouts, but we will see stern competition among the eight teams that are divided into two groups each. Four of those (top 2 from each) will reach the semifinals.
None of the teams or the millions of viewers will prefer a crucial match getting marred by rain, even though it not something in anyone’s control. That is why the apex board of cricket, ICC has formulated rules for a truncated match.
What constitutes a full game in T20 World Cup 2024
Like in the T20 format, a team should have batted atleast five overs or should have reached the winning target, whichever comes to constitute a complete game. However, in the T20 World Cup, the above-mentioned rule is applicable only to the games in the League Phase or the Super Eights.
In the case of semi-finals and Final, the minimum number of overs required to constitute a game is 10 overs. Meaning, at least ten overs will have to completed in each innings for a result to occur. This is done to understate the importance of the occasion and to give teams a fair chance for a chance at win. It is to be noted, these rules were in place in the previous edition as well.
Reserve days in T20 World Cup
For a rain interrupted league or Super eight stage games, there won’t be a reserve day and if the game doesn’t gets completed on the match day, then a point each will be given to both the teams.
The rules are tweaked in case of the knockouts where in semifinal 1 and Final, there is provision for the game to be moved to the next day from the same match state if the scheduled day’s play is affected. Since the gap between semifinal 2 and Final is just one day, the second semifinal game doesn’t enjoy a reserve day.
However, the scheduled time can be extended up to 250 minutes for the Semi-final since it starts 10.30 AM local time and while only 60 minutes of additional time is allocated for SF 1.
